If I could describe the political landscape in 2018 in one word, it’s “dizzying”.
Since the election in 2016 I have gone hoarse trying to keep up with everything happening in my country and I feel absolutely powerless. By the time I can catch my breath after the initial wave of grief/outrage, there is a new wave of grief/outrage sending me spinning into the undertow.
But on Valentine’s day 2018, Seventeen High School students were slaughtered in Florida, and rather than the same thing happening at Sandy Hook, at Pulse Nightclub, at Mandalay Bay, something new happened. The students stood up and decided to fight. Minors. Children. These students have inspired me to do something, even if it’s minor, even if it fails, I need to try!!
I need to do something.
I am a business owner in Orange County teaching music to kids after school. I am connected with the local art colony in Fullerton. I have tons of contacts with my former students who are high school aged. I have tons of small-business experience enabling me to run an organization.
I came up with the idea one day and I decided to do it: Purchase semi-automatic guns at market rate, cut them to pieces, then turn the fragments into art. I have all the elements to do this, now I just need to put it all together.
I can’t do it alone.
It’s intimidating, it’s scary to go out on a limb like this, but I’m choosing to try. Children are leading the charge and it’s a shame on us as adults that we haven’t done more; I’m willing to change that. There is simply zero argument against gun control that is valid, and I’m ready to put my money where my mouth is. I’ve been to 50 countries on Earth and I know this to be true. Japan makes and plays the absolute most violent video games of all time. Other countries have fewer gun deaths because other countries have fewer guns.
Am I capable of changing Washington and making the US government change gun laws to make fewer guns on the street? No.
Am I capable of using my own resources and connecting a community together to just take a few guns out of circulation, turning those weapons into art? Yes.
Get involved.
If you think you’ve got something to offer that will help, get in touch via the contact form. Because I can’t do this alone.
